They have endless use beyond their intention but who makes the best cup holder?

Know who has the worst cup holder? The Chevy Uplander.

Kinja'd!!!

There's no divider so when one is commonly used as a change holder the coins will spill into whichever side they want which is a pain if you need to use said cup holder... to hold , you know, cups. So enter duct tape divider. Awesome problem solved right? Nope. Was it designed for 64oz 7-11 mega ultra big gulps because it's colossal. Even worse is how shallow the walls are. Take a turn just a little too sharply an your drink is gone - even worse with a top heavy 64oz mega ultra big gulp. The fix? Ketchup packet wedge.

So I ask - who has the best/worst cup holders?

EDIT: Worth noting that it only fits regular bottles and cans. If you have a fountain drink/large coffee/arizona sized can, etc. you're SOL.

the ones on my BMW... They don't exist. There have been so many times I have gotten a drink only to realize "shit, I have no place to put this." Last time I brought a to-go cup of coffee into work I spilled TWICE on the drive to work. Luckily I drink black coffee so no stickyness and it just wiped up.

I don't have a picture, but I like the front one in my car. It has the depth for a big gulp with a rubber mat at the bottom (it's actually a perfect coin holder) and the extendable grabby things. It's just a shame it's squished between the front seats and the handbrake gets in the way...

The two cupholders on the first gen MINI weren't brilliant, thus facilitating the need of adding these aftermarket ones in the photo. The problem was that they were too close to the switches below the A/C controls. You couldn't put anything other than a soft drink can in them - anything taller or wider just wouldn't fit.

Primed to dump on either person, both sides are open like that. But yea, when you have a drink the passenger can't use the arm rest. Also if I had a manual, it would probably be the worst.

Luckily I never spilt anything, but thats because I don't trust it and hold my drink in the slightest of bends.

My Audi wins for the worst.

There's only one cupholder in the front. You slide back a piece of wood paneling in front of the armrest and behind the gear lever, next to the (real) parking brake, and there it is. There is only one, because the space for the second one is, as you can see, occupied by the GPS controls. Which means, if even a tiny amount of liquid spills from the drink, it will go all over the buttons and the car's electrics will be screwed. Other cars may have more useless cupholders, but only one can claim to kill your car if anything spills.

But that's okay, because it's actually too tiny to fit anything. There are two in the rear armrest, but they are flat, and only about 1/4 inch deep, which means no matter what drink you put in them, it will fall over. This just happened yesterday, when we put a drink in it for the first time (my brother wanted to bring a soda). It spilled going around a 10mph turn in the parking lot.

I literally think the Germans (who don't eat or drink in cars, and thus don't need cupholders) put such terrible cupholders in their cars as a way of thumbing their noses to us obese Americans and our distracted driving habits. Every single other thing about this car is thoughtfully engineered, so you know anything this poorly thought out (especially by the Germans) had to be deliberate.

The worst that I have run across are those on the Volvo 850. As somebody who is far too obsessive about clean interiors to eat or drink in the car, I like the fact that they slide away into the armrest rather than wasting space all the time, but like all folding cup holders, they're far too flimsy to actually use anyway, and are useless for anything but holding cups.

Plus their location above the power window and mirror controls makes them a pain to use with the cup holder open, and conveniently directs any spillage straight into an expensive switch unit. Lovely.

My BMW 135is has pretty stupid cup holders.

Kinja'd!!!

So it looks like there's 2 cup holders behind the shifter, right? Except the rear one is actually covered by the arm rest when it's down. If you want to actually put drinks in both cup holders, you need to flip up the arm rest. Also, the largest diameter item they will accommodate is a 24 oz Brisk iced tea can, which is only 24 oz because it's stupidly tall.

That monstrosity sprouting up from the console to the right is also a cup holder. It is—thankfully—optional. I don't have it on my car.

My old '99 Miata was even worse though. The cup holders were inside the center console bin.

Kinja'd!!!

See that circle shaped indent on the left? Cup holder. If you want 2 cup holders, that little ring flips over into the larger section of the console bin. But you have to drive around with the lid up, and your drinks when positioned in here are unstable and get whacked by your elbow when you shift.

Kinja'd!!!

Here's the tan version of the bin, so you can see the little flip ring 2nd cup holder more clearly. This person decided they'd rather put a change holder in there.

Oh wait, we were talking about which cars have the best cup holders. Oops.

It's perfectly-sized to hold most fast food drink cups. Now, there's a good argument to be made for why it might be considered one of the worst - if you've got a passenger, it's unusable, and if you open the passenger-side door before removing your drink, well, you'll have no drink - but I think the very fact that my car, which otherwise would have no fast food drink storage options at all, actually has such a perfect little spot, merits a little praise.

MKIII Supra had a cupholder that dropped down from the console lid. Of course if the support bar broke, the can would fall through and spill. Oh, if you had a manual your elbow would hit the drink each time.

BMW e39 needs a nomination for worst for the following reasons:

They will break. Guaranteed.

If your drink is larger than a 12oz can you need to pull the small piece out every time you put your drink into place or risk breaking the cup holder.

They block the dual climate sensors and buttons so you need to take into account hot or cold drink temperatures before putting your drink in the holder.

if the drink is in a container with a taper like every to-go cup and especially tiered large cups (think large D&D iced coffee) the cup will be on the verge of spilling at all times and will also be in the way of shifting.

2001 Honda Civic.

One is too wide and the other is WAY to wide. plus if you get a large drink from any fast food place it hits the underside of the dash. My 99 was like this too.

Kinja'd!!!

My 97 Accord was worse, they were behind the sifter which made it very uncomfortable to shift into 4th. And the cover was supposed to pop up when you click it down, but it never did, the spring was too warn out. Plus it was right under the sunroof which meant they filled up with water if you left the sunroof open and it rained.

Kinja'd!!!

but that's better than the cup holders in my 91 Civic.

What I've done with most of my Hondas is get some foam tape and stick it inside the cup holder. It works pretty well if you get the right thickness.

I don't have a picture of it, but on my old Chevy Caviler I made a collapsible cup holder out of tuperware and duct tape. I found a small tuperware container that is wide enough for a drink, cut it in half, and hung the bottom part from the top with duct tape. I attached it to a A/C vent with a clip, and boom, a perfect cup holder.

Either generation of Neon. They're so good, in fact, that if you go to forums for other cars of this class you could probably find a tutorial for swapping a Neon console in just to get the cupholders. They are low and out of the way, down by your calf almost, and the vertical clearance is tall enough that anything will fit into them despite the center console above it. The third cupholder behind the shifter can't take anything taller than a soda can though, because it interferes with shifting.

The new 991 911 has really cool cup holders:

See the silver trim piece on the right of the navigation system? It's split into parts because one of those parts is a button that opens the other one, which produces cup holders from behind. Probably really annoying, but cool nevertheless.

I had a new Ford Focus rental car last week during my vacation in the Dallas area. I only counted two cup holders in the whole car, both were near the hand brake and center console. Is it true the Ford Focus only has two cup holders?
